How Insulin Affects Your Weight

how insulin affects our weight

Every time you eat your food is converted into glucose which enters your blood stream. Your pancreas releases insulin  to deal with the glucose which is great, however if your insulin is constantly being raised by you snacking or by you eating foods that convert to sugar quickly a few problems start to occur.

Insulin as well as dealing with the sugar in your blood stream is also a fat storing hormone. So if you are constantly eating  and your insulin levels are constantly high the energy from your food is going to be converted much more easily into stored fat.

So the simple solution to lose the fat is to keep your insulin levels low for as long as you can.

There are lots of ways you can do this too

  1. Stop eating between meals. You don’t need to have constant snacks to keep you going. Snacking is a really easy habit to change
  2. Start leaving a gap of at least 12 hours between your evening meal and your first meal the next day.   If you have your dinner at 7pm don’t eat again until at least 7am the next day
  3. Think about what you are eating. The foods that raise your insulin levels most are processed foods.  Manufacturers add sugar to most processed products because it makes them taste good. Even savoury foods like processed pasta sauces often have added sugar.
  4. Add more protein to your diet, it keeps you feeling fuller and we also need more protein as we age to help avoid muscle loss.
  5. Eat home cooked food as much as possible
  6. Take a walk after at least one of your meals

If you stick to these general principles I promise you will start to feel and look better very quickly
