Try a cooling mattress or matress topper to reduce hot sweats

menopause symptoms sleep Mar 31, 2023

If you are suffering from menopausal hot sweats at night then you might be interested in a interesting article I read in the North American Journal of Menopause  recently which said that women who used a cooling mattress pad at night experienced significant and clinically meaningful reductions in hot sweat frequency, sleep disturbance and hot flash interference with daily activities.

The study itself was quite small and I was a bit skeptical, however I thought it was worth exploring and so I purchased a cooling mattress topper myself and have started to use it and I am happy to report that it certainly does seem to help with hot flashes at night.

If you want to look at the mattress topper that I have I will pop a link at the bottom of this blog.

There are lots of mattress toppers  to choose from and I picked one from a UK firm with good reviews.

When you get into bed initially it does feel cool and it is comfortable to sleep on.  The great news is that so far it I feel like it is definitely helping keep me cooler at night.

I am not usually a fan of gimmick ‘products” however I am definitely keeping this item and if you are suffering from hot sweats at night you might also want to try one out too.

So what are these cooling mattresses and how do they work?

They are a type of bedding that is designed to regulate body temperature and dissipate heat and are often made from materials such as gel infused memory foam, latex or open cell foam. They are engineered to wick away moisture and heat from the body creating a cooler and drier sleep environment.

This is the company description...

"The intelligent thermoregulation two-step system works by firstly offering a cooling sensation before the first sign of moisture. It can also sense an increase in body temperature which then activates a unique cooling effect allowing moisture to evaporate, mimicking the body’s natural evaporative cooling mechanism. When the body has reached its ideal temperature, the reduced body heat will guide the cooling effect to ease back so that you won’t feel a chill."
